Professionalism is an important aspect when writing a resume if it is to raise the interest of potential employers. Most people take for granted the things they include in their resumes yet they are the determining factors for the employer reading the resume to the end and even picking that phone to call you in for an interview. Although the resume should be a summary of who you are and what you are capable of, there are some things that should be avoided at all times when structuring this important document.
Exaggerating and lying: In the attempt to impress the potential employer, most people have resolved to lying in their resumes as well as exaggerating on what they can do. This is something that should be avoided since if found out, it could end up ruining any chance you stood of getting the job. You could also end up with a job you know nothing about meaning compromised output which could be costly both to you and the company in question.
Using Jargons: Avoid the use of hard words or jargons and instead choose a language that is simple to understand. Just because you used some acronyms in your last post does not necessarily mean that they will be of any relevance to the potential employer hence should be avoided in the resume at all costs. Anyone reading the resume should be in a position to understand all the information and not get lost in the world of jargons.
Objective statements: When writing your resume avoid using outdated objective statements and instead indicate exactly what you are expecting from the current opening. The one mistake people make when structuring a resume is using the same objective statement they used years ago which in not striking.
Copying: Always avoid copying a friend’s or relative’s resume. Be original in what you do regarding your interest and skills on the current job opening. This will increase your chances of landing the job. It is also of great importance to proof read your work before sending the resume out. Correct all mistakes by reading the resume out. You can even try reading this to a third party as a determinant of the impression it is likely to make on the employer.
