Safety Counts With Both New And Used Forklifts

You must be very careful when driving a forklift to prevent a disaster. This holds true whether you're working with new or used forklifts. A forklift driver can make a mistake anytime, regardless of how experienced they are. They may become distracted or simply forget a rule that ends with terrible consequences. Here are few of the most common mistakes when it comes to using this equipment.

Height Limitations

Each machine comes with a rating as to weight limits. Never lift anything that exceeds that limitation. If you try to do this, you may bend the tips of the forklift or cause the machine to tip, resulting in your cargo being dumped, perhaps putting yourself and others in danger. Know what your machine is rated for and don't exceed the recommend weight. It's important that you know this limit before you start your job.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

This may sound simple, in fact so simple it almost goes without saying. However, anyone driving a machine needs to pay special attention to their surroundings, especially when things get busy. It doesn't matter what style of equipment you use, it can easily hide something from your view until it's too late. Alarms and lights may help some, but you shouldn't use them exclusively. Before moving the machine, do a quick walk around to make sure there is nothing obstructing your path. Pay special attention all along the path to guarantee nothing can snag the cargo as you pass by.

Different Safety Steps For Each Power Source

New and used forklifts may have various power sources and each will have their own safety regulations that you need to be aware of. Electric, gas, or propane powered machines all require safety measures to make sure nobody gets injured. Each manufacturer should include a safety precaution list that you should become familiar with. Each driver of the machine should know these safety rules. For battery-powered equipment, you want to make sure that your eyes, face, and skin are all protected when charging the battery. Make sure all cables are in good condition as well.

Maintenance Schedules

Following the recommended maintenance schedule for both new and used forklifts will extend their work life span. Keeping the equipment in top working order not only is good for the machine, but is good for safety as well. For example, if the brakes are not checked and maintained, it can lead to failure and an accident. The same goes for loose or damaged parts. If you notice something that doesn't appear to be right, have it checked to be sure.

Keeping the equipment clean may be difficult to do, but it can make it a safer machine to operate. If you work outside or in intense conditions with high dust, this can be an even greater challenge. Loose rags, dirt, or other debris that shouldn't be on the equipment can cause the operator to fall off, injuring not only the operator, but perhaps other workers as well. Schedule a regular cleaning session for your equipment, this goes for new and used forklifts.

Forklifts can make many jobs easier, but they can also make the workplace dangerous if they aren't maintained properly. Remember these safety tips and it won't matter if you're working with a forklift in Chicago or any other city, you'll be safer.
