You're great at planning. You have a master's degree in planning little childhood get-togethers. You have a bachelor's in making sure everyone gets there I time. Or, you're horrible in planning. You couldn't remember the last time your kids went to a birthday party, and you certainly couldn't remember the next one they're invited too.
Either way, you've been selected to plan a baby shower. Lucky you! This is a great honor even if it won't feel like it at times. Most mothers love baby showers who wouldn't love people spending two hours with everyone ooohing and ahhing over their new baby's clothes?
You've got a job to do.
The first biggest task and this is really the biggest task for most is picking somewhere to hold the party. Sometimes you can hold it in the mom-to-be's house, but it's better if someone else hosts it makes it feel like less of a chore for the mom-to-be. You can have it at your house, or, if you're afraid of the crumbs on the floor (that's me!), you can always ask you friends if since they don't have to plan the baby shower, they'd be willing to have it at their house.
Task one complete.
Task two is picking out the colors.
You have several options when picking out colors. You could ask the mom-to-be what colors she'd like, or, if this is a surprise baby shower, stick with "safe" options: blue and pink. Purple works also. Most baby showers do well in a pale color. If the mom-to-be has the baby's room prepared, surprise her and do the shower in those colors. Why not? Shows you know she's been planning ahead!
Side note: If you're holding this in a restaurant, it's a good idea to ask ahead and see if they have a problem with decorations. You could always hang little things off the side of the table, if they aren't hugely noticeable. The best policy is to asksee which places are willing to bend. If you want, you can also use this as a tool to help you on your hunt for which restaurant. Call all the local restaurants. Which ones let you reserve a seat? Which ones let you have decorations? Make a list.
Balloons and streamers are great decorations because they are cheap and easy to clean up. If you're feeling adventurous, try a little confetti. Do a wreath with little kids' shoes hanging down. Get creative! Decorate the balloons with smiley faces.
Don't forget about the food and drinks. Depending on the person, these will be more or less important than the decorations. Cake and punch is usually a good mix.
You can do any kind of cake you'd like. You have several different options. You could tailor it to what the mom likes if you know she likes football, design her a football cake or, you could do a neutral cake; something that's fine "for any occasion", just a plain square cake, or you could do something that's made just for the baby shower. Places like Wal-Mart and Kroger are usually willing to make custom cakes.
Ezinearticles recommends making a diaper cake, which is something virtually unheard of until now. Or if you'd like, you could do boots, or the kid's t-shirt. It's really up to you. Just be careful to keep it in with the shape of the party.
