Many people are just not hunters. They are not inclined to hunt, nor do they need to. Perhaps their ancestors were nut gatherers and not meat eaters. Vegetarians, who avoid meat primarily for conscience s sake, usually shun hunting altogether; their minds are firm on the matter of taking the life of an animal. Many such people are influenced, sometimes unknowingly, by Eastern philosophy and religions wherein the lives of all animals are revered. Most are just very kind hearted people.
People who do eat meat processed and purchased through the food markets feel little if any contact with the slaughtered animal. They choose to not think about the animal as having been a live creature. Many of these individuals are revolted at the thought of eating deer, yet do not bat an eye at consuming cattle or other domestic animals.
The response the deer hunter receives from the general public is, I don t see how you could shoot such a beautiful animal, for I could never do it.
Many non hunters use the term reverence for life. They do not comprehend, and do not wish to know, how someone would find it fun to kill deer. Such individuals seem to indeed have a respect for life but also a misunderstanding about that part of life called death.
Some non hunters have no trouble taking the life of a fish or that of a snake, relating their kill to the temperature of the blood, with higher regard for the deer as a warm blooded animal.
There are those who make take the life of a rat with ease but balk at the taking of a similar animal, the squirrel, thus representing the type who separately categorize good and bad animals.
I once encountered a mercenary who had little conscience concerning the taking of human life however, as a non hunter, had near violent disdain for those who took the life of innocent deer.
One of the most wonderful animated films ever made is the favorite Bambi. This film, with its emotional plea to the conscience, has left many with what is termed the Bambi complex. Bambi has been reintroduced every few years to the public. Deer hunters should see the movie if they have not. It is, after all, a deer movie, and it will increase overall hunter understanding as well as provide adult enjoyment.
Some anti hunters have joined the bandwagon with the animal lib movie stars to develop groups which have money as well as prestige.
Many non hunters are wildlife enthusiasts from way back who hunt and study deer and other creatures non consumptively, such as through photography.
Some hunters convert to non hunters after having a bad experience with wounded or suffering deer. To witness the victim of a misplaced shot, paunch shot animal fleeing from capture is a disheartening experience indeed. The screams of the animal are haunting and not easily forgotten. A fleeing deer stumbling over its own entrails is a very sad situation. Enduring the cries of pain is a torture, which the faint hearted cannot endure. Finding a fawn licking its lifeless mother is heartbreak.
Some anti hunters are gun control advocates who do not believe in the possession or use of firearms by the general public. This controversy over our constitutional rights and their regulation became a heated subject with the slayings of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King with deer rifles.
Another type of non hunter enjoys having deer about but only for the enjoyment of seeing. The family who watch deer through their picture window at breakfast falls in this group. Likewise, resort owners, dude ranchers and park owners want a good many deer around for the sake of tourists.
