Floods. How bad are they? How fast can it flood your house? How much damage can they cause? A flood can be really bad depending on where it came from and the damage also depend on how bad it is. A flood can flood your house in minutes whether it is a few inches of water to it flooding the whole house. It can also tear down your house in minutes as well because the water can take it and pull it down river. Floods can do damage to the walls, floor, ceiling, basement, attic, bedrooms, and other parts of your house.
It can bring things into your house like things that are from the sewers, septic tanks, mud, rocks, other debris, and trash. It can also bring in chemicals into your homes. The water can carry all kinds of debris from other houses or things outside, building, cars, pesticides, battery acid, gasoline, oil, or charges of electricity from a knocked down power line. It can also carry infectious organisms like E.Coli, hepatitis A virus, salmonella, typhoid, and shigella.
The pull of the water can pull anything down with it, take the ground right from under you, and as it gets higher, the more dangerous it will get. That's why it is not safe for you to go near the water. Heavy rain can make the water in the rivers and creeks go out of their banks and cause lots of flooding, especially in low line areas. Floods can cause huge mudslides, which are very dangerous and cause lots of damages to homes and buildings. Did you know that six inches of water from a flood that is moving fast can knock you off your feet?
A car can be moved in two feet of water that is moving fast. This is how bad a flood can get and what it can do. Never go into a building or your home after a flood because it will not be safe. Your home will have to be checked before anyone can go in. They have to make sure the power is off, see if the floors are safe to walk on, make sure nothing will cave in or fall down, and see if the stairs, walls, and the whole house are okay. It also has to be cleaned out first before you go in because of all the things that the flood brings in.
