Music is such a large part of our lives. When we go down the street you cannot help but here the sounds coming from a store shop near by, the tunes of a person humming in the near distance or the pitter pat of little feet running around and making an inadvertent musical number. As you can see music is everywhere and apart of us, physically, mentally, and emotionally, in many ways. It is how we express ourselves on a daily basis and often is a reflection of our tastes and how we spend our time. This is why it is so disappointing to see that the subject of music, both instrumental and choir, are being cut from the educational budgets around the country. This is article is meant to point out some of the benefits to musical education and, hopefully, convince at least a few to reconsider their choices in the matter.
To begin with, musical accompaniment is a great mental exercise for anyone. To read the notes on the page and then play them simultaneously is a benefit to both coordination and memory skills. Getting to the point that you can memorize an entire piece is quiet the accomplishment no matter who is involved.
In addition, reading music helps many of the learning skills deemed most important by educators. Being able to read is essential to music. As mentioned above to do so and play the song is a very good skill. By learning to recognize notes and then "sound them out" with an instrument, music mimics the standard way of how to read. There are also counts and beats through out various pieces. This is largely mathematical as students must count and learn how to keep on pace with that count.
There is also a camaraderie factor that goes along with being in a band. Students must learn how to play as a group in order to achieve the sound that is supposed to be played. In essence, this is a practice of team work and cooperation, another set of skill educators deem important enough to strive for.
These are just a few of the reasons that musical education needs to be important and more utilized in standard education. To remove it so hastily from school budgets is to short change the young kids you have been trained to help enter the world. Doing so will cause a further decline in educational performances around the country and is exactly the opposite of what is needed.
