Even though gas prices have recently dropped I think all of us realize this will only be temporary and eventually the price of fuel will rise and surpass the high levels it was at. So in an attempt to realize this inevitability and start saving money now what are the best options when it comes to buying a vehicle not only to save us money but reduce the good old carbon footprint we leave to other generations.
I guess before we start talking about the vehicle options I think we can all look at reducing first. If you happen to be lucky enough to live near your grocery store or even some restaurants leave the car and start walking. Most of us aren't getting any smaller and walking is one of it not the best way to lose weight and get some fresh air! Then there are the usual ones like car pooling, talking public transit and just driving less. Most of us can reduce the amount of driving we do but the reality is because of how we have developed the urban and sub urban landscapes in North America most of us require at least one household vehicle and here are some options to choose from.
First off let's just assume that you already have in mind the smallest and most fuel efficient vehicle in minds and are simply wondering what new technology is best. Most of us have heard of Hybrid vehicles, these cars and SUV's have a standard combustion engine along with an electric engine and some batteries. The combustion engine is only used when the electric engine and the batteries run out of power. The cost savings in fuel and to the environment are real but there is a larger cost at the dealer. Others also argue that the extra materials that are required to build a hybrid and the vast areas around the world they need to come from far outweigh the overall reduction in carbon. For me the jury is still out on the hybrid, as for the technology it is pretty darn cool!
Next and I believe the most common sense alternative are Blue-Tec diesel systems. So what is it? Basically standard diesel engines don't emit hardly any carbon into the atmosphere but they do add a huge amount of smog pollution. What Blue-Tec does is harness this pollution into a multi stage catalytic converter system all but eliminating any air pollution. The added bonus is that these parts don't require any special metals they are simply metal filters. On top of all of this diesel requires much less refining compared to standard pump gas. Refining fuel is a huge carbon contributor and we have another huge reason for embracing this technology!
Overall it's good that most of us are thinking and concerned about what we are doing to the environment, what we all need to do is research and ask ourselves where do these products come from and regardless of how much carbon they reduce when using them how much is created building them?
