With the economy in the state that it is in, prices are skyrocketing everywhere. The situation with rising gas prices is also raising the price of everything, especially food. This is leading many households to do without some things and cut out some costs. However, there is a way you can still buy all of the groceries you are used to, and not break the bank.
The first thing you need to do is to figure out where you spend your food money. You need to write down every grocery store, every restaurant, and even every vending machine. You need to figure out how much money you spend at each location. You also need to sort out which food you buy is essential and which food you buy is something you do not even need. You may find that you spend more on food items that you do not need than you think. Try to eliminate some spending at locations that you spend the most money at.
Another thing you should do is to simply cook for yourself. You will find that when you cut out eating out at restaurants or at theaters that you spend much less money. You may also find cooking for yourself as more rewarding than simply having a person at a restaurant or at a fast food place simply throw something in the microwave and just heat it barely above a lukewarm temperature.
You also need to make a habit out of comparing different brands and their respective food to price ratios. Would you buy a name brand box of ramen noodles that only had six packs of noodles for $1.20, or would you buy an off brand for an even dollar? Generally, you would choose the off brand. You should also keep in mind to save your leftovers. It has become common practice in many households to throw out leftovers after meals, but if you save the food and store it in your refrigerator or freezer for later use, you will stretch your dollars just a little bit further. You should also make sure that before you go to the grocery store, to check your freezer and refrigerator to see if there is not food already in there. This will save you from wasting a trip. You will also save money if you live relatively close to your grocery store. This will especially save you gas money.
