Many people must weigh and debate the pros and cons of doing business with a small, local courier company versus doing business with one of the large federal giants in the shipping business, such as FedEx. There are obviously ups and downs to both sides of that issue but what most people really want to know is what actually differentiates the two companies. Many people don't feel like they know enough about the services that FedEx offers, or that their local couriers offer, for that matter.
However, these little details are what will establish how they are different from each other and may possibly allow the consumer to make a more informed decision. There is not one blanket answer as to which kind of company might be better for any given company. Depending on what the nature of your business is and what your needs are for shipping, it can be more advantageous for different people to do business with different types of companies.
FedEx is, obviously, a giant company. They also have a much greater existing infrastructure than any local delivery company. If you deal with a great many international shipments, it can obviously become more expedient to go with a large carrier like this, rather than an Atlanta courier service which would probably just pass the packages along to FedEx anyway for international delivery. However, if most of your deliveries are in the local, in this example, Atlanta, area, then there are several reasons that the local courier could be better. They are likely to have drivers that are as familiar, if not more so, with the area and they are going to be more likely to want to build strong business relationships in the local area. This often means that they are going to be willing to go above and beyond the kinds of service that FedEx is willing to offer.
For example, many local couriers will come and do a point to point run for you. This means that you can call your Atlanta courier service and they will send someone straight to your building to pick something up and take it to its destination. Also, with a smaller company, you will get to know your driver and, hence, be able to trust him more. Working with a smaller organization with consistent drivers that they can get to trust is often important to many companies that must courier important legal documents. Let's face it; some individuals just do not feel as comfortable with a larger company who may provide them with a different driver each time.
