This year Britain has become a lot more serious about the Eurovision song contest, they have a new presenter and most importantly the decision of the artist will not be made in a few hours. We have seen XFactor style auditions be presented infront of us and now week on week the final six acts get eliminated.
But in all honesty the shows standards are nothing like the X Factor some acts (not being named) have got through to the final six without being able to hit a single note correctly. The X Factor has ongoing talent throughout the show, the only singer in Your Country Needs You that I can see potentially winning the Eurovision with a good song is Jade Ewen.
Jade Ewen has an amazing vocal range, sometimes a bit shouty but could be easily taught through. Every week she has just got better and better and when all 6 acts sing together you can see that she is the only one with really any stage presence. It would be a shame if the public did not vote her to win as we would have thrown a great chance of winning the Eurovision.
But can the Eurovision be won by Britain even if we create a great artist and song? We all know that over recent years people have complained about block voting, but I do not think this is the case. If Britain did an overwhelmingly good song there is no way people would vote for rubbish. In fact the songs that have won over the past few years from countries such as Russia and Greece have been excellent choices.
We will see if Jade comes through victorious and if so it is all down to Andrew Lloyd Webber to deliver a mind blowing song. I think a nice ballad would suit her voice nicely. This year of all years should at least see Britain finish with some good points in the bank. Other countries have taken the Eurovision very seriously for years and rightly so, it is one of the longest singing competitions around. For a country that created the likes of Pop Idol and X Factor we sure are not doing very well in the overall country competitions.
I hope this year's entry can restore some much needed confidence back in the Eurovision, we will also see the old jury voting feature come into effect for 2009 amid all of the complaints, so maybe it is Britain's year to win as 50% of the votes will be decided by the public and 50% by the jury, which was fazed out in 1997 which was the last time the UK won.
