The aging process which encompasses the effects of gravity, sun exposure and the stresses of daily life begin to show on a persons face as they age. Creases form between the nose and the mouth, jowls begin to form, and neck muscles loosen becoming prominent and form what are called "bands". Fatty deposits can also appear in the neck which too becomes more prominent as the aging process progresses.
A facelift will not stop the aging process. However, it can tighten the Facial and Neck muscle structure, remove fat and tighten skin which in turn create a more youthful appearance.
A facelift can be done by itself or in conjunction with other procedures, such as blepharoplasty (eyelid) or rhinoplasty (nose) surgery. An excellent candidate is an adult in good health whose face, eyes, neck, and/or jowls have begun to sag or droop.
The average age of a patient having a facelift ranges between forty and sixty-five, but occasionally we will see patients well into their seventies.
Typically, facelift surgeries will last about three hours with an additional three hours allowed for recovery.
Facial implants are used to improve balance in facial features. The implants are specifically designed for cheek and chin augmentation. There are many types and shapes of implants available from different manufacturers using a variety of materials. Materials commonly used are silastic and gortex.
Implantation of a chin implant takes place through an incision approximately 3/4 inch long on the under side of the chin. A pocket will be created over the bone for the implant. The appropriate sized chin implant is then placed inside the pocket. Once the implant is in position, the skin will be closed with sutures. Typically there is some bruising and swelling around the chin area for a week to ten days following this procedure.
Implantation of cheek implants takes place through an incision inside the mouth just above the front teeth, creating a pocket, under the upper lip. The appropriate sized cheek implants are then placed inside each pocket. Once they are positioned, the skin will be closed with dissolvable sutures, which will fall out in five to six days. After the cheek implants are in place, it is rare to have them migrate or move. Swelling in the cheeks lasts from two to three weeks; however, some mild residual swelling can occur up to two to three months after the surgery.
