Answer: My answers to these questions are going to be short. Why? I don't focus on membership sites and they are not my forte. I don't spend time analyzing the nuances of membership sites because I think they have too many points of failure. There are simply too many things that can go wrong in a membership site which lead to support issues. I just don't want to deal with that headache.
However, my opinion on membership sites is that having a lot of subscribers makes a membership site successful. More members can mean more money in your pocket, but can also mean more support issues. You have to think about how much time, money, and energy you have to give in order to maintain your membership site.
You asked about the necessary features for a membership site. My answer is that to find these features you should focus on your niche and the area that you are in. It really depends on what types of bells and whistles your target market desires. It also depends on your niche and how topics in your niche can fit into a membership site format.
Again, I don't pay too much attention to membership sites. However, I did find a cool membership site that I signed up for recently. It is in the real estate niche and is a good example of a membership site. This membership site has an extensive amount of features from search capabilities to videos.
They have packed a great deal of information that is relevant to the real estate niche into their membership site. Although, some of the features are unnecessary and good be removed. It takes a delicate balance between the needs of the members and the right features.
My advice is that if you are going to create a membership site then keep it simple. Don't worry about adding webinars and frills because most people won't care about them. The users just want to know specific things. I just want to be emailed alerts when properties in my area become available so I can do a search. That is all. I don't care about the webinars, manuals, etc. that they have added to the membership site.
