Securing a publishing deal in this day and age is a very tricky task. Publishing companies are becoming more and more reluctant to take on new authors as they unfortunately don’t come with the guarantee of selling thousands of books and making large amounts of money for publishing companies. Previously publishers would have taken a financial risk by signing a new author that they felt had a good story to tell, a strong and well written manuscript, or just something about them that made them edgy and appealing to a wide audience. Nowadays writers have to almost be able to guarantee their success and literary worth to publishing companies before they or their writing will even be considered.
Fortunately, whilst it might be harder to secure publishing deals nowadays, it is still possible and new writers are identified and snapped up by publishing companies. So if you are an aspiring or unpublished writer don’t become too disheartened. Yes you have to work on your ‘pitch’, but if you can convince publishers that your work is worth publishing then you could well be in with a chance of securing that all important publishing deal.
So what do you need to do to help convince publishers of the merits of your manuscript, poetry, novella or collection of short stories? Well it is all in the approach. Pitching yourself and your writing in the best possible light is often the only way to receive any form of acknowledgement or consideration by publishing companies. Below are some key points for you to consider when pulling together your ‘pitch’.
1. By far the most common way to pitch your work to a publishing house is via a Publisher Pack. A Publisher Pack will usually include; an author biography, a well written cover letter that introduces you and your work to the publishers, a synopsis of your manuscript, some detailed market research which demonstrates how your manuscript would sell, and some sample chapters or examples of your writing. You should ensure that when you approach publishers, you have all of this information ready.
2. You need to pull on what it is about you that makes your work sell-able. This is where the author biography comes in handy. Use this document as a means of describing why you would be an attractive author to a wide range of readers. Are you an expert in the field that you’ve written about? Have you had any work published before? Do you have links to the press or to local book stores? Have you already made strong connections with the group of people who are likely to read your finished book?
3. Show off your writing talent. Ensure that all of the documents within your Publisher Pack are well written. Remember, you are putting yourself forward as a professional writer so every word you write reflects on your talent and ability.
4. Do your homework. Address your Publisher Packs to the right editor, include any additional documents that they may want to see, and set out your Publisher Packs in light of each publishing houses’ individual style guidelines.
