As more and more of us face job uncertainty it doesn't hurt to be prepared in the event that the job cuts sweeping through industries of all kinds include you. Whether you've been employed with the same company for three years or thirty years, aside from having no job at all one of the scariest things about looking for work is the job interview itself.
A job interview is a meeting in which you are selling yourself. You're selling your skills, your attitude, your capabilities and your confidence. And though we tell ourselves and each other that it's what's on the inside that counts, when it comes to a job interview, the outside definitely does count.
How you present yourself, and how you dress for the interview, can make or break the deal. Chances are that if the interviewer doesn't feel that you've dressed appropriately, you will not be offered the job regardless of your qualifications.
A simple way to avoid this happening to you is with a call to the company's HR department to inquire about the company's dress code. If you've already had a chance to observe the office when you picked up an employment application form, or to drop off your resume in your door to door canvas, take your cue from what the people in the office were wearing.
There's a note of caution here however. Even if everyone in the office was wearing jeans, do not, under any circumstances, go to you interview dressed in blue jeans. They're simply too casual for this occasion.
Both men and women are advised to wear a darker colored, conservative suit. Leave the loud patterns at home and stick to solid colors or muted patterns like a small pin stripe. Men should wear a white or light colored coordinating shirt and muted tie. Leave "fad" ties like the one you bought at Disney World in the closet. Ladies, a coordinating blouse, and make sure that "the girls" aren't on display.
Make sure that your shoes are polished. Dirty shoes, or those that are old, cracked or dull tells the interviewer that you don't pay attention to details.
Comb your hair and brush your teeth. This should be obvious, but unfortunately I've attended my share of interviews where the person being interviewed still had breakfast lodged in their teeth.
If you wear jewelry, keep it to a minimum. Earrings are for ears, and they shouldn't be visible on other parts of the body. That means no nose rings, eyebrow rings or other visible body piercings.
Ladies, your makeup should be muted. You should wear it, and it should not wear you. Leave the smoldering look for the nightclub.
You should be odor free. Forget about the perfume, not everyone likes it. If the person interviewing you doesn't like the scent you're wearing, their long lasting impression of you will not be favorable.
Don't forget to smile. Smiling shows confidence and confident interviewee makes for a comfortable interview.
