Lets today look at how people are successful working from home. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2004 released a report that there are 7 million people that are self employed or are working from home in the US. They must be successful with such a large number of people doing it and successfully. Why? Being disciplined and setting goals is a good start.
Working from home certainly can have its challenges. The term "self-motivation has an entirely new meaning when working from home. You are no longer the employee but you now have the dual role of employee and boss. You dont have a boss or a secretary giving you work that needs to be done. You are in control. Its your job to decide what work gets done and your job to do the actual work required. All your equipment is right there. Your computer, phone, fax, and you never have to leave your office since now its your home.
Whats important is to find balance and some people actually set up office hours when they are available. It gives not only perhaps your clients but yourself some guidelines. Some people like a not so strict method of deciding when to work. They just discipline themsleves to work a certain number of hours per day and that could be early in the morning or late at night depending on what else they have going on in their lives. The common theme in either case to be successful at working from home, you must actually do the work. If you dont you cant expect to be successful.
Now you cant escape challenges with work just because your working from home. The challenges are just different: family committments such as children, projects around the house, outside family and friends also can "take you away" from your work.
When family and friends realize your working from home they automatically think your available for going out, help on projects, etc. Its takes persistence and discipline to make sure these distractions dont stop your production from your work. If they do ultimately they will affect your cash flow.
Another way to be successful is goal setting. It is very important to have goals that are realistic and that you can conquer to make it measureable. Deadlines are goals in the real world and some companies in sales use quotas to measure their goals.
In our industry there are personal goals should work for us. Whats important is to set those goals and work at it until you have achieved them. We are not talking about resolutions that are tossed aside a few weeks into a new year. Your goals are something your working for and in the case of the working from home industry that usually is payment (cash).
