"Earth Two," the concept of a place where humans might eventually be forced to evacuate to, has long been the subject of science fiction. After all, with 6.75 Billion people living on Earth One, each pouring out carbon, our landfills are overflowing and our resources are quickly becoming scarce.
It is quite conceivable that the day will come when Earth One can no longer support humanity, forcing us to find a new place to call home. Unless we begin acting now to conserve our natural resources.
It might surprise you that there are a few things that we can do to greatly reduce our carbon waste and it doesn't involve shivering under a rock and eating soilent green.
Want a quick way to save money and the planet? Try carpooling. Cut your gas cost in half by finding one person to ride with.
Cut it down to 25% by finding three others. Think of all the money you could save not to mention making some new friends. Remember you'll be saving them money as well, so they should like you just for suggesting it.
What about the food you eat? All health experts have one suggestion in common: eat more fruit and vegetables.
This is another great way to reduce your footprint because it takes much more energy to produce animal protein then vegetable protein. And for all the vegetarians reading this, thanks for saving the planet, not to mention making livestock happy.
What about beauty products? It is estimated that the average woman will consume 6 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime.
That's a lot of fish scales, but more importantly: lead. Imagine five women sitting in a room, each holding a small mirror applying lipstick.
If just one of those women would stand up and say they are tired of ingesting the lead their lipstick contains, beauty companies would consider removing it. This might not have a huge effect on our carbon footprint, but it makes everyone feel better.
Let's face it, no one should have to pay money to wealthy cosmetics companies to ingest harmful ingredients. Until they do remove it, stay away from the expensive lipstick, it is more likely to contain lead.
To reduce the size of our landfills don't take anything that you can't eat or reuse. No more ATM receipts, no more credit card statements, no more paper bags.
Let's face it, they just clutter up our lives and that clutter finds its way into our landfills as well as into our emotional state.
We look at our bank balance and worry about the bills, and then we have a piece of paper that makes us worry about landfills. Who needs all the worry?
Pay your bills on-line, give up the clutter. Anything that clutters up our lives - clutters up our planet.
A few simple changes can really make a different, especially if all 6.75 billion of us started to adopt them. Who knows we might not need Earth Two after all.
