There are so many high chairs for infants and children on the market that it can be frustrating to choose the right one. If it is your first time looking for a high chair, there are some things that you should take into consideration.
1. Test the fastener on the high chair’s safety harness. This is just as important for high chairs as it is for push chairs. Try the harness fastener with one hand to make sure it is easy for an adult to use. If it isn’t easy to use, you may be tempted to leave it off, which isn’t good. A three-point harness is fine for a baby that is content with sitting still, but if your child wiggles a lot, leans over the sides, or tends to stand up, a five-point harness might be better for you because it will keep him or her from falling.
2. Make sure to buy a high chair that has a cover that can be easily wiped clean or is removable and washable. The cover should be made of substantial materials and not feel flimsy. It should also be soft enough that it won’t chafe and not have seams that could scratch a baby’s skin.
3. If you want a high chair that has wheels, make sure that the wheels can be locked. They should lock manually, so your child can’t reach out and give something a good push to send him or herself rolling.
4. Test the eating tray. A good tray should be simple for you to remove and replace, but impossible for your child. The tray’s latches should not be accessible to your baby. You should also make sure that it doesn’t have any rough edges that might scratch or holes or hinges underneath where little fingers could get caught.
5. Work with the high chair’s height mechanism to make sure that it works easily. Not all chairs have adjustable height, but some have the ability to adjust through a wide range. An adjustable high chair will allow it to be placed at the height of virtually any dining table so that the baby can eat with the family, as well as accommodating parents of different heights.
6. Give any high chair model that you are considering a good shake before purchase. Make sure that the chair is sturdy, not wobbly enough for a child to rock and turn over. Choose a chair with a base that is quite a bit wider than its top, so it will be stable.
