7 Tactics to Get You Noticed at Work

By : Shawn Wilson    99 or more times read

Sometimes it's tempting to try and fly below the radar at your job. If your boss doesn't notice you, he or she won't bother you. Or won't give you more work. Or won't chew you out for a mistake. And if your boss doesn't notice you, you think, he or she probably won't think of you when it comes time to make a list for lay offs. But the truth is, if you're not valued (that is, you're not noticed) at your company, losing your position during difficult financial times is that much more likely. And advancing at your company isn't very likely at all.

Want to have a higher profile at your company? These seven simple tactics will do just that.

1. Stay busy. For most people, business comes in waves. Sometimes you're overrun by projects; other times you can take it easy, spending a little extra time improving your internet dating profile or checking ads at Craigslist. But if you want to be noticed, taking it easy is never the right tactic. If you're out of things to do, go to your boss and ask for something new. Even better, ask for something that will give you a head start on your next project. The more often you do this, the more your boss will see you as his or her go-to person.

2. Speak for your department. You know the situation. Your boss asks for somebody to present a project or request a budget for your department. And most of you shift awkwardly in your chairs, unwilling to take on the extra work. But the more visible you are outside your own department, the greater chance of being noticed when it comes time for promotions within your department or lateral moves to other departments. So if the opportunity comes to liaison with other departments, jump on it.

3. Break up your day. Even if you love your job, there's a good chance that your days can get rather tedious. Especially if you tend to spend your days doing repetitive tasks, you might want to go to your boss to request more difficult --and therefore more interesting-- assignments. Explain to your boss that you'd like to develop your skills while breaking up the day's work. Chances are, your proactive attitude with impress him or her.

4. Get to know your boss. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to know all about your boss' personal life (because you probably don't). But it does mean that you want to have more daily interaction with your boss than you probably do now. If you're working on a project and have made a breakthrough or solved a problem, run your progress by your boss. If you can think of ways a particular project or process can be improved, make the suggestion directly to your boss. Having a good professional relationship with your boss is a great way to get him or her to see you in a better light.

5. Incorporate your skills. There are very few jobs out there that really utilize all of your skills. So if you have skills that you aren't using in your current position, volunteer for extra work that can help you to show them off. If you currently work in design, but also have skills in text editing, offer to help out with editing in your spare time during the work day. This will not only show your boss that you're capable and well-rounded, it will also expose you to wider notice throughout your company.

6. Ask for education. Many companies offer inter-office seminars and training to those wishing to learn. If you're looking to get noticed, it may be a good idea to take them up on this offer. Then explain to your boss how you plan to implement your new knowledge in your current position.

7. Participate in company activities. Do you tend to shy away from things like company book discussion groups or sports teams? Then it might be a good idea to get over your shyness and jump right in. Getting involved in company-sponsored activities is a great way to get noticed across the board at your company, whether it be for your intelligent discussion of the most recent book choice or your leadership abilities on the company basketball team.
