You may not realize it or care to notice, but the world is heavily influenced by digital art. Wherever you go, you will see billboards, bus stop advertisements, magazines, and more that are laden with digital images. Have you ever stared in awe at some of the images and designs? Have you, like many others, wondered how to do create those very images? If you are considering getting involved in some form of digital art or making a career out of your art skills, now is a good time to get into it. From company logos to advertisements to video games, digital art has never been in higher demand.
One of the most popular career choices of late is graphic design. Students can attend graphic design classes at trade schools that focus on arts or other subjects, 2- or 4-year universities, and local community colleges. These schools will teach the aspiring graphic designer how to use the programs that are needed to create the visual images that you can see on regular household objects, food items, such as cereal boxes and soda cans, websites, and video games.
Depending on what school you go to and what your focus is on, there are different types of design courses you can get involved in. If you want to design characters in a video game, then you will want to take a video game design course because that will teach you to work the program(s) that are used by the industry. Other courses can teach digital web design, digital publishing, vector graphics, animation, digital art production, and more. An associate degree will be sufficient for entry level positions, but a bachelor's degree will be required for the more advanced positions. In some cases, the company will require a degree plus some hands-on experience in the industry.
Although the main focus of a digital art job is producing art digitally, having good old-fashioned drawing skills will come in handy. Anyone can create the image of a cat or dog on a program like Photoshop, Maya, or Illustrator, but one thing that a lot of employers look at is how well you draw without the aid of your computer. Showing a portfolio of hand-drawn sketches and artwork will also let the prospective employer know that you have an understanding of perspective, shading, and proportion.
As technology makes advancements and more things go digital, getting an education in digital arts can turn out to be a lucrative career.
