How Best Do I Preparing Myself For Surgery?

Educate yourself about the benefits and risks of breast implant surgery. The more you know, the easier it will be to talk to and understand your surgeon, as well as talk to your surgeon about what you want. Find a surgeon you have confidence in. You can learn more about different types of surgeons, like plastic or cosmetic, in the glossary. Don't let price drive your decision.

Pick the options that are best for you and your body, and then work out how best to pay for it. Be sure to clearly express your surgery goals with your surgeon. Ask your surgeon as many questions as you need to feel comfortable with your decisions. Choose a surgeon who is part of the Breast Implant Follow-up Studies (BIFS), which allows us to track the long-term safety of our products over the course of 10 years. Look for surgeons who work with a board-certified anesthesiologist. Know your options ahead of time by visiting Breast Implant.

When you first sit with your surgeon, you will discuss your specific goals. He or she will explain to you the different options you have for type of filler, shape and projection, based on these goals. At this time, you will also work out a pre-operative plan.

Prior to surgery, your surgeon may give you specific instructions on which foods, medications and vitamins to avoid before and after your surgery. Typically, these include things such as Aspirin, Vitamins E and C, Ibuprofen, Other anti-inflammatories.

If you smoke, your surgeon will also instruct you to quit smoking for a while before and after your surgery. It's important that you follow these instructions closely, as continuing to smoke can slow down the healing process.

Finding the right breast implant is a delicate balance between what's right for your body now, and what results you will be able to sustain. To determine which implant is right for you, your surgeon will take a series of important steps. These steps include checking symmetry of your breasts, to see if they are even. Taking accurate measurements, the base width of your breasts, for example. Evaluating your breast tissue. Selecting an implant based on your measurements, volume and goals. Considering placement of implant. For more information about what to expect from surgery, consult your plastic surgeon.

Your surgeon will evaluate your breast tissue to see if you have enough tissue to cover the breast implant that he or she thinks is right for you and your goals. Choosing breast implants that are bigger than your surgeon recommends can cause problems over time. If a breast implant is too large for your body, it can cause excessive stretching and thinning of the skin and tissue around your breast, and in the future, you may need to have surgery to correct this. What's more, the edges of your implant may be apparent or visible after you have surgery.

Breast implant surgery can be performed with a general anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist, so you'll sleep through the entire operation. Alternatively, some surgeons may prefer to use a local anesthesia, combined with a sedative to make you drowsy, so you'll be relaxed but awake.

In general, there are three places you might have surgery an office facility, a separate surgery center, or a hospital outpatient facility. Alternatively, your surgeon may prefer to perform your surgery in a hospital.

You and your surgeon should discuss costs and payment. Some surgeons offer payment plans, or can recommend a method of payment. As you plan, be sure to factor in the cost of follow-up examinations.
