Premium Cigars At Discount Cigar Prices?

By : Ann Knapp    99 or more times read

In times like these, some cigar aficionados may desire a chance to save money--without skimping on quality. And that's where discount cigars come in. Though the words "discount cigars" may not sound especially promising--after all, we smoke cigars because we love good, sturdy, handmade smokes with an artful tobacco blend--in some cases, lower price does not have to equal lower quality. Thankfully, there are plenty of premium cigars available at a discount price.

As with other goods and services, you can often find especially good deals online. Just as major online book stores are able to offer super-low deals on new books--sometimes to the detriment of those mom-and-pop bookstores down your street--and just as your best bet for making travel arrangements is frequently to do so online, Internet cigar suppliers are also able to offer especially good deals. Those savings get passed on to you, the customer, making the Internet an excellent place to find premium cigars that are also discount cigars--such as the ones mentioned below, which are all available for five or fewer dollars.

You wouldn't expect, for example, to be able to find a cigar that's been called the "crowning achievement" of one of the most prestigious cigar-making families in the world at a discount price. But the A. Turrent Robusto, with its tan wrapper, unexpectedly creamy taste and sweetish, vanilla-nut finish was in fact the cigar made by the Turrent family to celebrate over one hundred twenty five years of fine cigar making. There is nothing discount about the taste of this Nicaraguan blend.

Nor would you expect a cigar from the Dominican Republic--the only country whose cigar industry now rivals that of Cuba--and which is sought-after all over Europe to be found on a list of under-five-dollar smokes. And if that same hand made cigar comes from the Tabacalera de Garcia factory (makers of Montecristo and H. Upmann among others) and has a rich chocolaty taste, even burn and lovely dark Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, with a blend of Colombian, Honduran, Indonesian and Dominican tobacco? Well, the Vega Fina is all those things--and yet it's one of the most reasonably-priced of all premium cigars.

How can you dislike a cigar with a name as patriotic as American Stogies? The rough, veiny appearance of American Stogies is a result of good Nicaraguan tobacco wrapped tightly together. American Stogies uses an all-Nicaraguan blend to achieve a mild, maduro flavor with a pleasantly odd tea-like tingling overtone.

Speaking of Nicaragua--and those who love premium cigars often do--it's the source of another brilliant discount cigar, the Tatuaje Series P, crafted by cigarmeister Don Pepin Garcia himself. The tobacco comes from Cuban seeds (though the plants themselves are raised in Nicaragua) and the stick itself tastes (according to various user reports) a bit milder than many of Tatuaje's other well-known cigars. You'll be hard-pressed to find another puro cigar half this good at this price, but the difference between the Series P and its slightly more expensive brethren, the Tatuaje Havana VI, is simply that sixty percent of its tobacco is medium-filler rather than long-filler. (The other forty percent of the tobacco inside is long-filler.) The difference between the Tatuaje Series P and the Havana VI may not be discernible to even a well-trained mouth ... but your pocketbook will be well aware of it.
