Custom displays don't have to be huge, unwieldy constructions to get your point across. Smaller, portable exhibits can provide the same impact, be more versatile, and much more cost effective over time than larger displays.
Ease of Transport
The smallest portable exhibits fit in a briefcase and fit into an airplane's overhead compartment. You can be sure it gets where you are going. Larger visual displays can go into a standard suitcase or have their own storage cases. These can be checked at the airport and are far more likely to arrive than something consigned to a freight company.
With transportation costs skyrocketing, the savings of being able to transport visual displays yourself verses hiring a transport company can really add up over time. Plus, the less control you have over your materials the more likely something will become damaged. Turning the transport of large custom displays over to a freight company opens the possibility that they will arrive late, damaged or not at all.
Your trade show equipment may be too much to take with you on the plane and smaller visual displays can be shipped by express carriers that guarantee delivery by a certain day and time. It's not quite as reliable as carryon, but gives you more control over the fate of your visual displays.
Versatility
Small custom displays offer more options for promoting your business. Typical booth displays can be erected at a trade show but have limited uses in other, smaller venues. A portable exhibit can be set up wherever you can get a few inches of space, allowing you to take your company nearly anywhere.
When you're not at the tradeshow, consider volunteering time or materials at local nonprofit events relevant to your business. The charity will appreciate the help of a local business and using your visual displays as discrete, tasteful exhibits will bring your company to the attention of event guests.
When not in use at other locations, custom displays give you another opportunity to reach customers at your place of business. They can act as marketing exhibits or as functional visual displays, presenting literature or business cards to your clients.
Design Considerations
Smaller custom displays need special design features to carry the same impact as their larger cousins. They should be exciting and attractive, catching the eye of people who pass without being garish. Graphics and text should be simple so the display doesn't appear crowded. They should match your company's image and color palette so people instantly know who the exhibit belongs to.
Their dimensions should fit their mode of transport. It would be frustrating to create a display for overhead compartment transport only to discover on your first flight it is a half-inch too large. If you plan to ship the device with an express carrier, find out the carrier's size guidelines. Most portable displays are designed to collapse into a smaller space so you will want one that can be set up or taken down easily.
Even if you have a set of traditional trade show displays, a portable exhibit adds another point of focus for people passing by. They can bring more traffic to your booth and give you further opportunities to promote your business.
