When looking around for a good used guitar, there are quite a number of things to keep in mind. This is especially true if the guitar that you are looking to buy is your first guitar (or any other musical instrument for that matter). Choosing the perfect guitar for you can seem like a challenging task, but knowing a few key points before starting your shopping can greatly decrease the chances of picking out the wrong guitar.
The first thing you should do is talk to someone who you might know that is experienced with all the different makes and models of guitars and see what they would suggest for you. If you give someone in the know a budget that you are will to spend an an idea on the type of music that you want to play, they should be able to make a great suggestion. Even if you don't know anyone with the guitar skills, you can go online to various guitar related forums and ask the question there. Someone is bound to help out and who knows, they may even have the perfect guitar that they are willing to sell to you.
After you get your suggestions and are ready to hit the music shop, it is important to look at the guitar's neck to make sure there is no damage and that it is straight. Bringing a guitar player with you can definitely help with this because they can show you what to look for.
Hold the guitar in the playing position and make sure that it is comfortable for you to play. With all the different shapes and sized that electric and acoustic, you need to make sure that it fits you properly. Some of those crazy shaped guitars may look cool but if you aren't comfortable when you are playing it, you will have a hard time in the future.
The next thing you want to do is plug the guitar into an amp (assuming that it is an electric guitar that you are shopping for). You want to make sure that the electronics are working properly and there are no obvious crackling, popping, etc.
Once you determine that it is a good working guitar and you are comfortable with playing it, you are ready to buy that perfect guitar. Enjoy! Just remember to do your research and ask for help from more experienced players.
