What is LTL Delivery Service?

People in a particluar city who need to ship their goods around the state or the country will obviously require the services of some kind of local courier service. However, there are a number of different shipping companies and options out there. What kind of company you use, whether it is a specific airport courier or a full service trucking company is going to depend on the amount, size, frequency and weight of the shipments that you want to distribute.

One of the common terms associated with shipping and the courier industry is LTL. This term stands for 'less than truck load', and refers to any shipment that will take up less weight or room than would be necessary to fill an entire truck. The opposite of this is FTL, which stands for full truck load. Full truck load shippers would be people who are shipping enough bulk to justify the cost of an entire semi trailer of various sizes in order to move their goods. Of course, those people with smaller loads may want to use an LTL service instead. If they are on the small end of the LTL scale, they may instead opt for breaking their load down further and utilizing the services of a smaller parcel carrier, like a local airport courier.

An LTL load typically ranges anywhere between 100 and 10,000 lbs per load. This is obviously a wide difference but the load is used to accommodate anything that is too large for a package courier and too small to occupy a full truck load. Obviously, this includes a wide range of shipments and deliveries. These LTL options are often utilized by smaller businesses that simply don't deal in the kinds of volumes that are necessary to utilize FTL shipping companies.

Because of the way that an LTL shipment works, it can take longer than a FTL. Typically, a truck will come to a pickup location, usually on some kind of schedule that has been worked out between the local courier service and the shipping company. From there, the shipment will be taken to a terminal where it will be weighed and sorted, and then loaded onto a larger truck for long haul transport. Somewhere along that route, the truck will stop at another terminal and the load will be broken down into smaller vehicles which will then take the goods to their final destination. The downside to this is that there may be several redistributions of goods until they reach their final delivery point.
