When a business does most of its business within the greater Chicago area, they might not have to concern themselves as much as National companies about the costs of shipping to other states on the far side of the country. However, any business that deals in goods likely does have some shipping requirements, and a concern that can come up when using a Chicago courier service is if there are additional fees for shipping outside of the city itself to the suburb areas. There is not blanket answer to this dilemma, as different courier companies will handle these situations differently. There are some general business models that most of them fall under, but in order to get an accurate assessment of the costs of your shipping you will have to discuss your needs directly with your courier company.
While there are of course many other factors which can determine the price of your delivery with a Chicago courier service, (size, weight, special requirements etc) the base price of a delivery usually is based on distance. However, when it comes to transporting goods to the suburbs there are usually two ways that a courier company will assess the base distance fee. The first is a strict mileage model. This is where a company will have a base zone, usually a radius of about 25 miles from around their center of operations. Any deliveries inside this zone will be assessed a flat rate, and deliveries which venture outside of it, which may include suburbs, would be charged on a per mile basis.
However, as a major metropolitan center with a great many suburbs of varying sizes and distances from the city center, some Chicago courier service companies may instead decide to move to a zone based system for within the great Chicago area similar to what some couriers in Toronto and New York have done. This will divide the different suburbs into zones which are all assessed at a different price point. If you can include your delivery in the regularly scheduled trips to that zone you will be assessed at the zone price. Obviously a point to point delivery will be much more, and is really an altogether different thing, but this is a different pricing model for regularly scheduled deliveries to the suburbs which may also be in place. Usually, unless it is very close to the city limits, a suburban delivery will cost slightly more.
