So you are flat broke, unemployed, and the bills are piling up. Of course you are worried about the fact that your wallet has not had a visit from Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, or even George Washington in a couple of weeks. You are probably wondering how you have gone to so many job interviews and not have any prospects. Well, it may not be that you are not making an impression so much as it is that you may be making a bad impression. That is right. It may not be the employer not seeing how great of an employee you could be so much as they just see how bad of an employee you may be. Here are some of the most common things people do that derail any hopes they have of getting good paying employment.
The first thing some people do is forget one of the most important rules of getting a good job, dress for success. Dressing to impress never goes out of style. It was true fifty years ago and it is still true today. Depending on the nature of the job, wearing casual clothes may work, but if you are looking to take a next step in your career, then dress it up a little bit. It is never a bad idea to be impressive and this definitely applies to when you have an interview.
Your personality is also something that you need to keep in check. Are you a gossip? Do you bad mouth your old boss or co-workers? Were you ever known as the guy that nobody wants to be around? Well, if you exhibit any of these characteristics while being interviewed, then you may need to know how to tone it down, for the sake of your career. You should also make sure that you do not seem desperate for a job. It is one thing to express the need for a job, but when you begin practically begging for one, that can come off as annoying to a potential employer. It is best to simply show that you are capable and confident in your abilities to do the job.
Another important thing to not do is to become bored during the interview. The amount of interest you show while your potential future boss speaks with you shows them that you are capable of keeping focused on whatever task you are given. When you are really in need of a job, putting on the best face you can could mean the difference in whether you get hired or not.
