Firefighters are looked up to, considered as heroes and are highly respected by people. They are hard working professionals who are willing to help out individuals.
Many people aspire to be firefighters. However, not a lot know that becoming a firefighter can be pretty hard. Nevertheless, it is a challenging and fulfilling job that you would find also very rewarding.
Currently, there is a tough competition for firefighting positions. In every opening, there are usually ten to fifteen candidates. So to make yourself more attractive for this position, why not equip yourself with sufficient knowledge you can use to get ahead in the race?
First of all, explore all possible resources that could help you in landing you that firefighter job. There are classified ads in the newspapers that you have to take note of. You may also check your local library every Monday, as they also post job listings for larger cities.
The following step is to of course, fill out an application form. Your local fire department may provide you with the application form. You may also get from them the schedule of interviews and exams so that you can prepare better.
After submitting your application form and other requirements, you are now ready to take the written exam. Firefighting exams usually take about 3 and a half hours which include about 100 questions. What you can do is to read up using firefighting books or manuals. There are many books available in the library or bookstores should you wish to purchase one for yourself. You may also search in the Internet for materials that can help you.
If you pass the exam, you are now eligible for the physical test. The main goal of such a test is to stimulate your firefighting duties. You would be able to get a feel of a real fire fighter's job such as dragging the hose and carrying it, climbing the ladder, carrying the victim and bringing him or her to a safe place. You would have to accomplish this task wearing the proper gear and usually you would be given a definite amount of time.
If you are successful at this step, you will be called for a physical and psychological evaluation. As a firefighter, you would be subjected to a great deal of stress and exhaustion. Your body and mind should be ready. These evaluations would more or less gauge your readiness and if you can indeed carry out the task of a firefighter.
Having gone through all of these successfully, you would most likely be hired by the fire department. As you can see, becoming a firefighter takes a lot of work, effort and time. You cannot easily get into the team without going through the examinations and evaluations. These things are here for a reason, and it is to equip you with the proper skills and knowledge that you would need in rescue operations. At the end of the day, after going through everything and passing, you would realize that it had been all worth it.
