How To Optimize Trash Collection And Scheduled Street Sweeping

Street sweeping minimizes water and air pollution. Street sweeping machines in general are ten point six feet in height and dump trucks for garbage collection are twelve feet high. This being so, low hanging tree branches obstructs the passage of such vehicles, and homeowners in various residential areas must trim trees regularly back to thirteen and a half feet above the alleys and streets to make way for street sweeping machines to pass by unhindered and without delay during scheduled street sweeping.

There are times when garbage collection and street sweeping scheduled activities are both programmed for the same day. The homeowners usually have three alternatives to set out their garbage containers or receptacles. Moving the garbage receptacles off the streets during sweeping days minimizes the need for machines to "snake" in and out which adversely affects the cleaning of the streets.

The following options are recommended to make the street sweeping around commercial and residential streets of the Greater Toronto Area or GTA:

The first option is to set the trash bin or recycling container on the edge of the driveway. The trash or recycling container must be placed on the driveway's edge during sweeping and collection scheduled days. Be sure to place the containers close to the street as much as possible but not on the sidewalks because this will hamper the passage of pedestrians when garbage or recycling containers are placed further away from the streets, the collecting garbage trucks will be unable to reach them for disposal.

The handle of garbage/recycling containers or receptacles must be placed in such a way that it faces away from the street. Be sure to position the garbage/recycling container four feet away from the any other hindrances like other containers, trees, mail boxes or lamp posts.

The second option is to set the trash or recycling receptacle off the street at the edge of the curb line. When collection of garbage or recyclable materials coincide with the scheduled days for street sweeping in the residential streets of Ontario, the containers of such must be positioned off the streets.

In relation to this, the containers must be placed as closed as possible to the street but not on the sidewalk since this will hinder the smooth passage of pedestrians and placing them farther off the streets will prevent the garbage collecting truck from easily accessing them. Containers must be placed at a minimum of four feet away from other obstacles like mail box posts, trees, lamp posts, etc.

The third option is to set the trash or recycling container on the opposite side of the street. The trash or recycling container must be placed at the opposite or other side of the street if garbage collection and street sweeping are scheduled on the same day.

The containers' wheel must be placed against the curb and the hands of the receptacle must place against the curb. The handles of the receptacles must face away from the street.

Be sure to place the garbage or recycling bins and receptacles four feet away from other containers, trees, lamp posts and mail box posts. Remember that garbage collection trucks normally run on both sides of the street even if the street sweeping activities happen on the same day.
