The coldest season of the year is winter. During the Ontario's winter months, snow contributes minor accidents on Greater Toronto Area (GTA) roads. Some of these accidents may cause by people who drives to fast. Some vehicles may slide off into the ditch or into the guardrail. Because of this, it is important to do road flushing activities since snow roads are challenging to motorists.
Road flushing is the process of wiping down the snow and takes it through the drainpipe. It is important to control traffic volumes and to restore the normal condition of the road throughout the winter. This job is really challenging to contractors who are responsible for the road flushing and ice control. Contractors must provide an efficient maintenance of the road for the benefit of the public.
Here are some snow control policies and procedures:
1 - For snowfall less than 2", snow removal is not necessary.
2 - For snowfall more than 2"-6", immediate road flushing is required.
3 - Police and public work employees must alert the public about the road flushing by doing some media notification.
4 - Put some signage to alert the drivers and motorists.
5 - Monitor the weather.

Residents can also help during the winter months by ensuring safety in the neighborhood. It is not necessary to park your vehicle on sidewalk. Do not park along the service roads to give way to ambulance and fire trucks in case of emergency. Clear the snow from fire hydrants as much as possible. Do not put the snow back to the street. Snow shall be removed from sidewalks as soon as possible or within twenty four (24) hours after a snowfall. Temporarily apply ashes, sand and other materials to sidewalk for cases that snow and ice are hard to remove. Put some salt to melt snow (if you added salt to snow, it will lower the freezing temperature of the water). Keep in mind that cooperation from people will help clear the village's roads. Do not plow and move snow from private parking. Keep streets clean as much as possible.
