The Nintendo Wii games console seems to be getting ever more popular amongst gamers and this is probably due to the unique interactive game play, where you can use the motion-sensitive remote control as a golf club, baseball bat or any other number of sporting implements. And this is the beauty of the machine. Ok, the graphics perhaps aren't quite up to the standard of say, a PS3 or an xBox360 but you have to actually physically join in the action rather than remaining motionless on the couch.
However, since it's launch in November 2006 there has been one recurring issue that gamers have had with the Nintendo Wii, and that is, simply, availability. For whatever reason, supplies of the console and especially certain games such as the Wii Fit, have remained astonishingly low and the Christmas periods of 2006 and 2007 saw people fighting over them in stores. It seemed that as soon as a stockist announced that they had received a new delivery, they were putting up the "Sold Out" signs again. Was this a missed opportunity for Nintendo, missing out on what would undoubtedly been far higher sales, or was it a marketing ploy to keep demand, and therefore prices, high?
It is possible to hire consoles and games but the appeal, I find, is somewhat limited. It may be a good idea to to rent a game just to try it out to see if you like it before buying it, but most games are available as demo versions via download from the game's site or on gaming magazine cover cds.
Things have improved somewhat in more recent times though, with the console itself being more readily available. But as I commented earlier, some games just seem impossible to get hold of. There is a new way to get hold of games though, and that is by digital download. There are several sites now offering unlimited downloads for a one-off subscription fee, which also includes the download software and tools, and unlimited support. If you find this option might be the way forward for you I would suggest you use a site which offers a money-back guarantee and offers more than just games, for example, movies, tv shows and music downloads too, all of which can be downloaded straight to the Wii console.
The same services are also available for the Playstation 3 (PS3) and probably other gaming consoles, with subscriptions around the $40 - $50 mark which is about the same price of one new game, and remember, this is a one - off fee for unlimited downloads so it's not really surprising that these sites are taking off.
So is digital download the way forward for gaming? Who can say, but it has changed the face of the music industry for ever, and it may just do the same for the video game industry too.
