Cleaning the roads off dirt and debris is very important in the GTA area in Ontario, especially after the snow melts before the spring season begins. The slush and mud which comes from melted snow makes roads hazardous, and cleaning them up by road flushing is necessary since it is a form of fast cleaning method that does not normally interfere with the ongoing road activity.
Places, like the Greater Toronto Area, which is prone to have snow during winter have roads the must be cleaned by flushing. Road flushing is compulsory to prevent accidents because when snow melts, it makes the roads quite slippery due to the sometimes hard ice that gets stuck on the road pavement. It also helps in removing unsightly dirt such as mud and silt that could be annoying to motorist and passersby alike.
Other forms of cleaning methods that are dry cannot be implemented during wet weather conditions such as after a snowfall during the winter months. Having a wet road pavement would necessarily require that the method for cleaning it would be by using water since other methods like sweeping and such requires too much time and effort and is not applicable in wet weather.
While it is true that road flushing is fast and convenient process, it is also a known fact that it increase water pollution and drainage clog up. The enhancement of water pollution could be attributed to the process of spraying the road with a pressurized volume of water that carries all dirt towards the drainage hole. Since the water is quite strong it carries said dirt into the drainage system and would eventually find its way to the natural water ways that serves the wildlife and is a source of drinking water for the public.
Preventing the occurrence of increase pollution due to road flushing method is certainly unavoidable since the flow of water cannot be controlled and diverted from the drainage systems below the road. Having a clogged drainage system cannot altogether be prevented because the water used for road flushing likewise carries tree branches, trimmings, leaves and other man-made objects within the drainage systems. It is unlikely that all of the debris could go through the drainage pipes, since some could be stuck somewhere down there preventing large volumes of water from flowing freely.
At any rate road flushing is also considered to be expensive because of the machines and personnel needed to carry out the job. People who man road flushing activities need to be properly trained and provided with the appropriate working gears. While road flushing work could be done at night time, it could also be done during the day. However, it must be scheduled at a time when road traffic is not heavy.
The need to flush the roads with water during the dry months is also necessary so oil spills and other forms of chemicals which run off the roads are removed. It could also be combined with other forms of road cleaning and must be scheduled properly in regular intervals to achieve effective results. While it may require more expense due to equipment and workforce, the effect of such cleaning provides security for motorists and vehicles that uses the road to travel to work and some other destinations.
