Being situated on the mighty Lake Ontario, the city government of Toronto has employed the services of technologically-advanced and state-of-the-art street flushing services to effectively rid the city streets, parks, roadways, pathways, and other public conveyance systems of papers, loose or felled leaves, plastic wrappers, candy wrappers, and other debris that can otherwise clog the various sewage and waterworks systems of Greater Toronto Area. Local flooding might develop should these water- and sewage ways are partially or even completely blocked by these unwanted debris from the daily activities of Toronto's culturally diverse population. Lake Ontario is home to an endangered fish specie known as "sculpin", a five-and-a-half inch fish which is a very vital link in the off-shore food chain. Sculpin is known to prey on bottom-dwelling invertebrate marine life forms and are themselves preyed on by the Lake Ontario trout. Other marine life resident to the lake include burbots, emerald shiners, alewives, salmons, bloaters, bowfins, carps, freshwater drums, herrings, sturgeons, whitefishes, longnose suckers, muskellunges, pikes, pumpkinseeds, smelts, rock basses, sea lampreys, walleyes, and perches.
Without an efficient and effective street flushing activities, these marine life forms which are highly valued for their meat and as prized trophies for game fishermen might harbor metallic sediments and aggregates which can be unfit for human consumption or otherwise be harmful to the other marine organisms above the food chain. Since fishing is also a thriving industry in the area, it becomes all the more necessary and crucial that street flushing is carried out in a systematic, organized, and highly efficient manner.
