In the past, when sanitation and waste removal became a problem in urban areas, governments had to hire real people to sweep the streets. While humans were effective at cleaning the streets of solid debris, a mechanical sweeper was soon invented so that more pavement area could be covered at a shorter time. The first mechanical street sweeper was patented in 1849 and you can just imagine the advancements that the machine has undergone through the years.
When human street sweepers were still being employed the only goal was to just make the roads look clean by removing all the visible dirt. Removing visible dirt from the streets in urban cities worked well in making the streets safe and beautiful. But soon enough street cleaning machines had to be improved because they were no longer sufficient to keep the roads at busy urban areas clean. Also apart from the regular mechanical street sweepers, other processes were needed to really make the roads clean. Road flushing is one of the things that were also introduced to make the streets clean. Road flushing involves using water to flush out dirt that is stuck in the pavement. The pressurized water loosens the dirt on the pavement making the job easier for mechanized sweepers and vacuums to remove the dirt from the road.
The Greater Toronto Area is a place where street cleaning is important. The truth is any urban area can benefit from a good road sweeping and road flushing program. No matter how disciplined and clean people are, debris and dirt will still get to the roads. Fugitive dusts could easily settle on the road from car emissions and industry emissions. Dirt and trash could be flown by the wind to the road. Dust from construction sites and other sources could easily get to the roads. During the winter, dirt can get trapped in the snow and only be released when the snow thaws. All these make road flushing and street sweeping important.
In some areas in the GTA, it has already been proven that maintaining a good program of combined road flushing and road sweeping not only improves the quality of the air but also limits the pollutants that are washed into the storm drains. Road flushing and street sweeping have become important parts of storm water quality programs in major cities.
They help in preventing pollutants on the road from getting washed into the storm drains and then flowing into natural bodies of water and polluting surface water. In studies it was revealed that even the small dusts ten microns or smaller can carry toxic particulates. So it is important for Ontario and other cities to maintain a good road flushing program so that the wastes, debris and dusts on the road can be removed from the streets instead of getting washed into storm drains.
As for removing dusts and other dirt from the road, it really helps in keeping the air in urban cities clean. Road flushing may not remove all the pollutants in the air but it still helps a great deal in removing a big percentage of the pollutants in the air. Dusts and dirt in the air can easily settle on the roads so road flushing really helps a great deal in removing all these kinds of dirt.
