Do Taxi Drivers Buy or Rent Their Cabs?

Whether or not a cab driver buys or rents their taxi depends a lot on the company they are working for, and on the driver themselves. It is safe to say that the wide majority of drivers in any given area, like those working in a metropolitan taxi service, are going to be those who are actually leasing their cars from the company that they are working for. For many, this provides the best and most financially viable option, especially if they are new to driving for a living.

There are those who do buy their cars eventually, however, usually these drivers are those who have been doing this for a living for a number of years. It is not an easy job, and usually drivers are advised to try it out for a number of years before they make a commitment like buying one of the cars. Because of the long hours, the potential abuse from customers, and the potential danger, this is not a career path for everyone, and the best way to test the waters is to lease a car rather than purchase one when starting out.

When leasing a cab from the any taxi service, it will come with all of the necessary equipment that you need to start driving and making a living right away. It will come with a dispatch radio or computer communication system so that you can receive dispatches from the cab company. It will come with the meter and electronic equipment to process credit or debit card payments if that is the policy in the area and of the company you are driving for.

When leasing a taxi, the responsibility of keeping the car in clean and pristine condition and fueled up at all times are the responsibility of the driver leasing the car, not the cab company. The car is your responsibility. Cab drivers who let the condition of their cars suffer, or who keep unclean vehicles are quickly reported the company in most instances and will rarely be called upon for their services for long if such behavior continues. Although most do follow this road and lease their cars, there are certainly drivers who have been at the career for some time that decide to buy the car. When already committed to the career, it can actually provide them with a financial gain to purchase rather than lease their taxi.
