The way you can get a debit card is to open checking account or get a prepaid debit card from a store. Debit cards are similar to ATM cards. They can be used by using a pin number or you can use it like a credit card. All you have to do is sign when you use it, but you have to watch out because someone else can use it and clean out your account. If you do not have a password on there, they will not have to use the pin.
You do not want to keep your pin number on you because if your purse or wallet gets stolen, they will know your pin and your account number. You need to have protection on it so if someone tries to use it, the store will take it from them and the bank will give you a call. They will also call you if a large amount or several amounts that are suspicious purchases or charges have been taken out of the account or if the card is being used in other towns or states. If it does get stolen or you lose it, you need to call your bank and cancel it and get a new one with a new number so your accounts are safe. If it was stolen, the bank will refund all your money and put it back in your account.
The bad thing about that is you might have to fight them to get it fixed. After you are done fighting with them or if you did not have to, it can take the bank 10 or more working days to get your money back into your account, so you will be out of money until then and you could be hurting. It is always good to have a password on your cards to protect your money because if you do not put a password, anyone can get your money very easily. If your debit card gets stolen and you do not report it as soon as possible, it can cost you overdraft fees.
The overdraft fees can be from $30, $60, or more dollars depending on how many withdrawals are coming in. If you use your debit cards at other anytime teller machines, then the banks will charge you a fee whether you are taking out money, checking your account balance, or transferring money. You have to watch how much you take out a day because these cards have a limit on how much you can take. So, if you go over your limit you will not be able to use it until the next day. You can set the limit higher or lower on how much you want to allow per day. The good thing about debit cards is that they are much easier to use than checks are.
