Laser hair removal is a process that has been developed over the last 20 years, and has been in use commercially since about 2007. A skilled technician applies a special light source to the skin and this light causes restricted, localized damage only to hair and hair follicles because they are generally darker in color. Heat is created by the application of light to the follicles, and the heat is absorbed by the follicles damaging them sufficiently so they cannot generate new hair growth.
The treated skin may feel warm when the application is being administered, but actual damage to the skin is prevented by using a cooling device that cools the upper layers of skin. As with most aspects of laser hair removal, the most effective treatment with the least discomfort can be obtained by an experienced laser hair removal technician.
Because the follicles are actually damaged by this process, when it is properly applied by an experienced technician laser hair removal results in permanent hair removal. This differentiates it from other processes such as shaving, waxing, or chemical depilatory applications which only result in temporary hair removal and must be repeated every few days.
Light emitted from the laser device finds follicles based on their melanin content. Melanin is what gives both the hair and the follicle its darker color. As a result, the laser hair removal system tends to work best on people dark hair and light skin where it is easier for the light source to seek and find the follicles.
Recent developments have made it possible to treat people with dark skin and dark hair. When applied correctly the laser light is able to differentiate between the darkness of the skin and the darkness of the hair and follicle within the skin. This can be achieved by using a Lumenis Lightsheer diode laser which, when used by a properly trained and experienced practitioner gives additional protection against damage to the skin.
Treating blond or reddish hair is a bit trickier. As new laser technology is developed and technicians acquire more skill and experience more skin and hair types will be able to be treated with this system. As things stand now the hair and follicle must contain at least some melanin in order to be treated effectively.
This method of hair removal has become very popular in recent years and has made significant gains on the only other treatment method that gives permanent results - electrolysis. Unlike electrolysis which must be painstakingly applied to each individual follicle, laser hair removal can be applied gradually to an entire area. Follicles are targeted by the selectivity of the light.
In both cases the follicle treatment results are permanent, but in the case of laser hair removal the treatment is much faster, and much less painful. This makes it more popular among those seeking treatments, and it makes it a much less costly alternative than electrolysis. Typical treatments of small areas like the upper lip area take ten or fifteen minutes. With electrolysis this normally takes hours, and a full course of treatments might be stretched over several months.
