Congratulations! You're a brand new doctor who has just opened a brand new practice. So where are all the patients? You have to go and get them! Unfortunately, it already cost you a small fortune and a whole lot of loans to get your office equipped, staffed, and open. There probably is not a lot of cash flow available for marketing yourself to the community, but it can be done. Here are some ways to bring in the patients while keeping your costs down.
-- Take out an ad, complete with a smiling and professional photograph, in your local newspaper. The wording could go something like this:
"John Smith, MD, is pleased to announce the opening of his Pediatric practice in the Cherry Tree Lane Medical Building. Dr. Smith is a cum laude graduate of Doctor University and his work with infant vaccinations in Bangladesh has earned him national acclaim. Dr. Smith specializes in the care of infants, children, and teenagers from birth to age 18. He is thrilled to be a part of your community and is now accepting new patients."
-- Have a party! Hold an open house and invite the public in to see your brand spanking new state of the art office facilities. Put a big sign and balloons out in front of the building to catch the attention of passersby. Make sure to serve something simple, such as free cookies and punch, to draw more people in. Everybody loves free food, and it will encourage good will in the community.
-- Ask local businesses if you can leave a supply of business cards in a special holder at their checkout line. Restaurants and copying stores in particular are very cooperative about supporting other locals. If their customers are looking for a local doctor, being able to take a small business card with all of your relevant information on it is convenient.
-- Cultivate friendships with the other doctors in your building. If you are friendly with one another there will be a tacit quid pro quo: you will recommend their services to your patients, and they will recommend yours to theirs. It's a win-win arrangement that will increase your patient base.
-- Consider doing a saturation mailing within your business's zip code. Studies show that most people prefer visiting a doctor who practices close to their home. There are companies that specialize in targeting mailer recipients to suit your particular needs. Using a direct mailing list like this will decrease postage costs while increasing the chances of reaching future patients who are most likely to visit your office. Good luck!
