With news channels running more and more stories about the declining UK jobs market you could be forgiven for thinking that there are no jobs available and that in a few months time the whole country will be jobless. Although the recession is clearly doing a lot of damage the UK jobs market is not dead yet and there are even sectors that are experiencing little or no effect at all.
Chemical and pharmaceutical industry - The research and development of new medicine has a long history in the United Kingdom, as does the development of chemical compounds and chemical based products. The UK is home to two of the world's largest pharmaceutical firms, GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca and the industry at large is a large employer, particularly in London. UK jobs in the chemical industry are also a major part of the local economy in the North of England. Avecia and BASF are both based in the area.
Service Sector - This is the biggest growth industry by far in Great Britain and the number of UK jobs in the service sector is proof of this. UK jobs in the service sector now make up about 73% of GDP with the financial services making up a large portion of this. Banking and insurance are both large employers and with London being one of the world's financial capitals the number of UK jobs that are on offer from many of the world's largest companies significant.
London has the largest number of foreign bank branches in the world in terms of its size and so also attracts a large number of people from abroad looking for UK jobs in The City. It is a base for many companies from abroad who use it as a base to do business in and across Europe and so it's reputation as a good place to operate from is unlikely to be effected by the current recession. Citigroup, the US financial firm is just one of the many companies using London as a base in this way.
Tourism - The UK has some of the most historic and beautiful locations in the world so it's no surprise that it is a popular destination for visitors from abroad. Stonehenge, Cornwall's Jurassic Coast and the many castles and stately homes across the country all attract visitors all year round; in fact the UK is ranked as the 6th most popular tourist destination in the world and has as many as 30 million visitors each year.
Many of the UK jobs in the tourist industry are to be found in London which is the most visited city in the world with over 15 million visitors annually. The tourist industry accounts for the largest variety of jobs in a single sector and covers things like catering, hospitality, entertainment and transport. With such a thriving tourist industry the number of people that gain employment as a result is always high. The jobs aren't necessarily long term but they provide a constant source of employment for those looking at the short term.
The creative arts - Behind the service industry UK jobs in the creative arts are the fastest growing part of the economy; mirroring the picture worldwide. The UK has always been know for its fashion, visual arts and music with famous names from the past including The Beatles, Mary Quant and Francis Bacon.
Today the UK is experiencing a resurgence in interest in British artists and designers led by the likes of Damien Hirst, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. The eyes of the world are once again looking at what London Fashion Week has to offer and what galleries like the Tate Modern are putting on their walls. UK jobs in the creative arts have received a much needed boost as a result.
