Getting adequate experience in the real world while still in college is important if the student wishes to make themselves stand out among their peers. Many students spend their college days stuck in their dorms, or out around campus and never really get the chance to experience what life is like off campus in the real world. When interviewers begin evaluating possible new hires; they look for well-rounded students that have had some exposure to the real world.
When a student has a college internship on their resume, they tend to be better prepared for life after college. Going through a little taste of the real world never hurts, as students will become better prepared to accept the challenges that lie ahead of them after graduation. With the experiences and lessons they will have learnt by the time their college internship is over, they will be ready to face whatever their future companies or bosses throw at them. Interviewers will notice that a candidate is better prepared for the real world if they have gone through some sort of internship or part-time job and were able to take something valuable away from it.
Not all internships prove to be valuable tools for preparing for the real world. Many do not utilize their interns to their fullest potential. Filing and doing other mundane tasks does not prepare them for the real world anymore than sitting in their dorm room. Sure they will have gotten a basic exposure to office life, but they will not have picked up any skills or have had any experiences that will better prepare them for the real world. Students should look for a college internship that gives them the opportunity to prepare for what life will be like in the real world, in a full-time job with real responsibility. Simply doing jobs that nobody else wants to do does not necessarily prepare them for what lies ahead.
Students looking for a college internship should consider one that helps them as they try to develop a skill set that will impress employers. When students walk into an interview with confidence, knowing that they are the most qualified person for the job, this confidence will project nicely to the interviewer. Confidence usually comes from having been there and done that. So having some experience in the working world will help to give students the confidence they need to walk into a job interview and knock them dead. Interviewers look for students that are confident and display real leadership ability or potential.
Learning leadership is important if students want to impress any employer, recruiter or interviewer. Being able to show that they are true leaders is very important for students that may not possess other important qualities. When a student walks into an interview, it is not only their academic qualifications that they should tout, but their past experiences in the real world and in leadership roles. Having a college internship is a great way to develop leadership skills that will impress interviewers and hopefully land them the job they are dying for.
