This History of No Age

No Age is an indie rock group consisting of guitarist Randy Randall and drummer Dean Allen Spunt. The band is based in Los Angeles and is signed to Sub Pop records. The name is taken from the title of a SST Records instrumental compilation from 1987, which was discovered by Spunt while he worked at Aron, a record store in Los Angeles. They have been listed as the foundation of The Smell, HEALTH, Mika Miko, Silver Daggers, Abe Vigoda, BARR, and David Scott Stone. No Age has strong bonds with the Los Angeles underground community and their DIY ethic can be related back to the 1980s hardcore and punk underground. That inspiration is really apparent in much of their music. The band has also released two full-length albums which they have toured extensively to support and they are also supporting the All-ages Movement Project, which is an organization that connects youth to each other and the arts through independent music.

The band was formed in December 2005 as a follow up to a previous band, the hardcore punk band Wives, in which Dean played bass and Randy played guitar. The first show was played at the New Image Art gallery for a show curated by friend and artist Rich Jacobs on January 22, 2006. However, their first real show was at Downtown Los Angeles venue The Smell in April in 2006 with the band Mika Miko. According to the band The Smell is where they got to experiment and explore what kind of band they wanted to be. It was an exercise that pushed the boundaries of whatever ideas they had about music.

In March 2006 Randy and Dean played one reunion show as their previous incarnation Wives for the underground film 40 Bands 80 Minutes! which was directed by Sean Carnage. Five limited edition vinyl singles and EPs were recorded and released on five different labels on the same day and the back of each record sleeve had a different color and one letter that if you collected them they would together spell No Age. The five EPs and singles were collected and released as an album under the title Weirdo Ripers on June 11 through Fat Cat Records.

No age is know for their community allegiance and for playing un-traditional venues, such as their show at the Los Angeles River to protest the Aqueduct. They have also played at such places as Food Fight, a vegan grocery store in Portland and the Los Angeles Central Library in downtown Los Angeles. Also a New Yorker article on the band in November 2007 bearing the title Let It Rip gave them much acclaim and fans.

After receiving lots of positive reviews the band signed to the well-known Seattle-based independent label Sub Pop and the band received support from many prominent contemporary bands such as Deerhunter, Colin Greenwood from Radiohead.

No Age started their 23-date long tour in New York with the band Liars in January 2008 with which the band also released a joint 7" single limited to 1200 copies. Also during this tour the band played at uncommon venues such as an Ethiopian restaurant in Philadelphia. In April the same year Randy also accompanied the Altamont Apparel skate team to Paris to fil then for a short tour film entitled "The Foreigners". The soundtrack featured exclusively No Age music and the film is currently being distributed for free at skate shops together with various Altamont products and also featuring the video for Eraser. No Age has also collaborated with the band before when No Age t-shirts were made featuring the distinctive Altamont font, and the band has also been wearing the companies clothing during concerts.

No Age released their debut record for Sub Pop entitled Noun in May 2008. The band was named one of 2008s best bands by the UK music magazine Mojo together with such bands as Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes. Also the band has supported other well know acts and released quite a few videos accompanying their various songs. Their record packaging has also been receiving lots of praise and has won a design award.
