What Causes Age Spots and What to Do With Them

That is not actually a Gordian-knot question that requires a Solomonic solution.

Those "cute" brownish patches

We live in a tropical country and we get used to plenty of sunshine. I remember when we were kids, my little sister, who is of fairer skin tone, had pale brownish spots on her faces.

They looked real cute. Everyone liked them but when my sister grew older, my mother noticed as if the brown spots are there to stay. With continued exposure to sunlight, my mom suspected they must be something else. To make this story short, my mother was in a state of deeper concern, especially when the brown spots turned darker in color. You know, we have a history in the family of melanoma or skin cancer.

Briefly about age spots

Age spots, sometimes called liver spots or lentigos, are blemishes on the skin. They are usually light brown in color. In more advanced stages, they may turn to dark brown or black.

Extended exposure to direct sunlight primarily causes age spots. Actually, it has less to do with aging and more with the sun. There are rare cases of age spots caused by heredity among younger people. They may also appear even among those in their early twenties or thirties because of too much exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun.

What causes age spots?

Extended exposure to the sun, especially between 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, is considered harmful and causes age spots. The UV radiation causes a lot of reactions within the skin layers. One specific factor that causes age spots is the increased production of melanin.

Melanin is the natural skin coloring pigment of our body. It is also vital in giving protection to the skin from external damage, such as suntans and sunburns. This explains why people who are overly exposed to the sun tend to develop darker pigmentation on their skin. This activity triggers a chain reaction causing the melanin-producing layers of our skin to produce more.

Of course, age still has something to do with our vulnerability in easily getting age spots. As we advance in age, there is marked decrease in the production of newer skin cells and collagen, among other essential elements.

Remember that they are responsible in maintaining balanced skin tone and texture. If you take a closer look at the countless anti-age spot creams and lotions that continue to flood the market, they are normally designed to address these specific weakening of the body processes. But do they really work?

Here's what you can do

Truth to tell, yes. But they only bring you temporary relief. They actually act as bleaching agents without treating the real cause of age spots. What you need to look for are those natural ingredients that were long regarded to help the skin minimize the effects of age spots.

They also contribute to the general healthy skin condition by helping you eliminate wrinkles and dryness, among others. Find out if they contain sufficient amounts of Phytessence Wakame, Cynergy TK and Nano Lipobelle H-EQ10. There are naturally occurring substances extracted from plants and animals known to enhance your skin condition and prevent a wide array of other unwanted effects of sunlight, aging, pollution and free radicals.

Finally, they are also effective in helping your skin maintain sufficient moisture and elasticity. Minimize exposure to sunlight, which primarily causes age spots, and use those natural ingredients to improve your overall skin condition.
