How Lasers Are Being Used in Fat Removal

Many people, try as they might, cannot seem to get rid of the fat that has accumulated in certain areas of their body. These areas can include anywhere on their torso, as well as their back, upper arms, or legs. People who have found that diet and exercise are not effective in combating these areas of excess fat thus turn to various medical procedures for fat eradication.

Fat reducing procedures such as Smart Lipo, Cool Lipo, Thermacool, and Slim Lipo. When people hear the name of these procedures, they might actually associate them with liposuction. While liposuction can be considered a cousin to laser-assisted treatments like Cool Lipo, Smart Lipo, and Slim Lipo in terms of fat reduction, the reality is that they are actually quite different from each other.

For example, liposuction is the kind of procedure in which the patient has to undergo general anesthesia, and the fat is sucked out through a tool called a cannula. This can lead to many health complications. However, in the case of laser-assisted treatments which are less invasive, Smart Lipo and Slim Lipo for example usually involve only local anesthesia, which is considered to be much safer and helps to reduce many potential risks related to the procedure.

Each of these procedures involve using a laser to rupture, and thus liquefy, the fat cells that have accumulated in the selected area. Then, through small incisions, the liquefied fat molecules are drained out of the body. The fat molecules accumulate in the first place because of excess fat that a person eats, but cannot be properly digested by the body. Since the lasers also work to cauterize the skin molecules, there is less bruising and bleeding that occur.

People who want to have laser-assisted treatments done should first consider whether they would, or would not, be considered good candidates for this procedure. The right candidates for Smart Lipo or Cool Lipo, as well as other types of laser-assisted treatments should be people who are already within a healthy weight range for their body type. Significantly overweight people will first be required to go on a diet and exercise plan for a full year before they can even start to be considered possible candidates.

At the consultation, the Body Mass Index of the patient might be measured, in part to determine how much fat can safely be removed. The surgeon will discuss the details of the procedure, as well as answer additional questions that the patient will have. One of these questions will most likely be in regard to how long the actual procedure will take. The length of the procedure will depend on several factors, but in general the procedure will take between two and three hours to complete.

Of course, something that many prospective patients are interested in finding out is whether they will need to recuperate in a hospital. Most patients will not have to do so, so these versions of liposuction are considered outpatient procedures. It is very important to note that how soon the total results will be visible is dependent on how much fat was originally removed.
