Breast Reduction Can Help Reducing Back Pain

While listed as a cosmetic surgery procedure, many women have breast reduction to reduce back and shoulder pain associated with breasts that are too large.

Your surgeon will discuss a variety of surgical procedures which reduce the breast including breast liposuction. Prior to surgery, pre-medication to relax the patient is administered and breasts are carefully marked to indicate where the incisions are to be made, and the surgical procedure is reviewed.

Plastic surgeons specializes in a limited scar breast reduction whereby the only scars are around the nipple and straight down to the fold. The nipple, areola (dark pink area circling the nipple) and tissue below are relocated but not detached.

Small sutures are used to close the incisions. This technique is very popular in Europe and South America. For more extensive reductions a third incision underneath the breast in the fold will be necessary. A breast reduction can take four hours depending on the extent of the surgery.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have one or more of the following conditions breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame, heavy, pendulous breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward, one breast is much larger than the other, back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts, skin irritation beneath your breasts, indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps, restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts, dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the largeness of your breasts.

Prior to surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general health of the patient. Surgeons will do a thorough examination of the entire patient as well as the breast to determine the most effective surgical approach.

He will describe the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected, and the possible risks and complications. Mammograms or x-rays may be taken as well as digital photography (no face shots!).

After surgery, the patient may temporarily have a tiny drain and will need to wear an absorbent pad over the stitches for five or seven days. A bra should be worn.

Pain connected with the procedure is controlled with oral medication. Daily showers and antibiotics will be continued to prevent infection. Instructions for the day of surgery include bed rest and limited activities.

Your surgeon will determine when normal activities can be resumed; however, weight training and aerobic exercise must be avoided for several weeks.

Sutures are removed in about 14 to 21 days at which time your surgeon will recommend massage to keep the breast supple. Numbness around the treated area may occur, but this condition is usually temporary.

Swelling and discoloration disappear in a few days, and scars from the incisions, although permanent, fade significantly with time, and the topical use of silicone gels or sheets help.
