The big buzz word these days on the net is Twitter, it seems as though Facebook has been dethroned, at least for the time being. So what is Twitter and why should I start using it? Twitter is a social network that works much like text messaging, you send 140 character messages but instead of it being strictly limited to your friends you send them to your followers and in the end the world wide web. As a member you have the ability to follow other users, every time they post a new message or Tweet you will be notified. Through Twitter search you can search all of the Tweets that have been posted.
Here is why this tool in my opinion has become so popular. In real time you can have access to the worlds information as it's happening. The plane crash in the Hudson river is one of the best examples, there were 5 or more people on the plane Twittering while the plane was sitting in the water and they were waiting to be rescued. At the end of the day news services like Google News are fast, Twitter however has the ability to report a earthquake to the world before the first aftershock has occurred.
The other interesting/compelling aspect of this system is that you can in theory follow anyone you want. Many well known stars and athletes are using Twitter, for some being able to get a glimpse of what your favorite singer or actor is doing is exciting stuff!
From a business stance there are a couple of ways to use Twitter, first is by answering questions that are being asked on the Twitter network. Let's say for example you have a mortgage business, you can use Twitter search to find other users that are asking question about mortgage rates, when you see these questions you can reply to these users and offer answers to their questions. Much like a forum post you aren't just answering one question for one user, because Twitter is a social network your answer is going to potentially hit thousands of users.
Another way a business can take advantage of the Twitter phenomenon is by posting related news within your business profile that is compelling to other Twitter users. The problem is unless you are specifically addressing issues they need an answer to you run the risk of getting lost.
In the end Twitter is here and probably here to stay until someone else creates an easier way to communicate. Some think the future of the web and social networks will mean most of us will actively use two or more social networks on a daily basis. Facebook to chat with your friends and family and Twitter to talk with the world and the list goes one. All I know is that we will be sharing more of our lives with the world and doing so on a regular basis! Are you ready?
