Do you love eating dessert as much as making them? If you have the passion for cakes, ice cream, pastries and cookies why not turn this love affair with sweets into a life long career? You can make money selling cakes or brownies made with the secret recipe you have inherited from your grandmother. You may also have the chance to join a professional kitchen in serving delightful meals and dishes. If love is what you have for making wonderful desserts, then becoming a pastry chef may be your calling.
The pastry chef is not your average baker. Usually he or she may be in charge of planning the dessert menu, researching new recipes and ingredients, improving traditional dessert recipes and of course, tasting and sampling his or her work. Desserts may not be limited to pastries but could include specialty dessert beverages, cheese and wine.
Becoming a pastry chef is not really that difficult. Aside from your love for making excellent desserts, you should also have an educational background in baking and pastry making. A degree in culinary arts is not a requirement although it can serve as one of the paths toward this career. There are also certificate courses such as Fundamentals of Baking and Pastry, or short courses with similar course curriculum that you can take. Even if you have graduated with a different course such as one from Business or the Sciences, you may still take short courses or certificate courses.
The beauty about taking such courses is that you can easily fit it even in your busy schedule. Never mind that you have a regular eight hour job as there are courses that are offered every weekend. These courses are all hands on and very fun, teaching you the fundamentals of baking as well as new tips and tricks you can make use of.
Becoming a pastry chef may turn into a professional career you can be very successful at. Starting rate for entry level pastry chef is about $8 per hour. The rate goes to about $25,000 per year as your experience builds up. Top pastry chefs may earn up to $60,000 per annum. Of course, the rates listed here are not exact. It can even go higher depending on the industry you are in. Hotels, restaurants and small bakeshops have different salary rates for pastry chefs. You may also open up your own business and the income that you generate will be different.
