Music for the souls, music for the heart… the enormous influence of the popular music has seen and faced challenges from diverse frontiers. More than one challenge has been rightfully put to justice by the intervention of the independent music. The independence from big label companies and the whole production process has urged this sort of movement to penetrate the very roots of popular music and have successfully established itself in the major authoritarian arena of the non independent music. The eternal reliance on the music for the sake of music and not as a commercial commodity have greatened the influence among many core music lovers.
The independent band or the indie band as they are colloquially known, try to abstain themselves from the artist creating phenomenon of the major music companies and focus on the soul of the music. The indie band trend came to life, as argued by many, with the emergence of the punk rock era. What mattered as was thought of great concern in the beginning was the distribution of the music that was created by the bands. Over time, as happens with the most prolific of revolutionary progresses, better ways of reaching out to the public emerged and the indie bands became more and more able to have the full control over their music.
It’s the internet now which has sort of upgraded the value of the music that is created by the indie bands by helping them thoroughly in the distribution scenario. The breaking away from the major labels have given the artists the power to decide their own way of delivering the music and not be a puppet in the hands of the big company whose corporate outlook almost destroys the ambition and the heart of the independent music. With websites promoting the indie band and the blogs, social networks and discussion forums, which are bridging the gap that was once difficult to merge, have directed the art for art’s sake with the community ready to operate for the movement that is independent music. Bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have chosen to give their music away for free.
There are some indie bands that rely on their music and some others who rely on the commerce of it through tours and publishing rights along with record deals. The indie band scenario is ever on the rise and the dedication of many artists is getting the right acclamation.
