By now, we have all heard the warnings about meeting and developing relationships with others on the internet. It’s well known that giving out personal information like your home address, phone number, place of work, or even self-photos can each compromise your safety. Measures against threat can all be done quite easily when chatting, emailing and blogging, but what about when using a webcam? Is it possible enjoy the advantages that webcams offer by still remaining secure and safe when meeting people online? Here are a few things to consider concerning webcams and your personal safety.
How often?
If you use a webcam only about thirty minutes a week, then chances are there isn’t much to worry about. As with anything that has risks associated, the more you engage in the activity the greater the chances of you being compromised. In other words, someone who uses a webcam ten hours a week should take far more precautions than the person who only uses a webcam only two hours a week. But the frequency which you use a webcam isn’t as important as who you are linked to. Which brings me to my next point: who is on the other side?
Friend or Foe
The most important thing to consider when using a webcam is the person with whom you are linked to and how long you have been communicating with that person. For instance, did you just meet this person last week, or have you been communicating for a number of months? It is always wise to build up trust for an online acquaintance before ever communicating via webcam. Spend time getting to know them through email and chatting, and once they have earned your trust and you feel comfortable, then begin using your webcam to communicate.
Surroundings
After you have decided to begin using a webcam with an online acquaintance, it is still wise to take certain precautions; for instance, consider where your webcam is located and what that person will see. If there are decorations, posters or photos that include information on where you live or where you work, you may want to remove them or move the camera so that such items will be out of its line of view. Audio is another consideration: if you are playing a radio or have a television tuned to a local station, remember that your location can be given away through a radio or TV broadcast.
Though it’s important to consider a few precautionary measures when using a webcam, remember that their primary function is to making online communicating fun! Don’t be afraid of using your webcam, just remember to be safe as you chat.
