On account of the inherent nature of the grape vine to grow over large areas, it becomes necessary to regulate the growth of the crop using methods such as pruning.
It is a vital activity which must be carried out regularly to produce a good yield every season and prevent over ripening of the fruit. It is important to prune the grape vine at the right time and the correct season to prevent any kind of damage to the crop.
Normally, grape pruning is carried out in early spring, as there are low chances of damage occurring on account of frost. You can decide when to take up the activity depending on the right time of the year to experience the best benefits from your crop.
Process of grape pruning
Many people fail to realize the importance of grape pruning activity which can bring a poor crop produce. If you want delicious and good quality grapes from the vine, then you need to prune them on a regular basis, else it can lead to overproduction of grapes, which may become a tough task to manage.
The grapevine may not have enough capacity to ripen all the grapes which can result in low quality of grape clusters. Grape pruning is also necessary as the grape vines may grow into a large size and occupy large areas of the land.
It is important to decide the manner in which you want the grape wine to be trained before planning the vine pruning activities. If you find some drooping vines, then you need to train them to a wire which is at a minimum of 6 feet. The right way to train the vines is to trim them and train them in the outward direction from the center, such that the newly grown vines can continue to droop on the highly placed wire.
It also depends on the varieties of grape vine of which some have a tendency to grow downwards or upright. Upright growing varieties are usually trained using a low wire, which is around 3 feet which is made to grow upwards.
Spur and cane pruning are the two different methods used in the process of grape pruning. In spur pruning, the cane is pruned so that 2-4 buds are left behind whereas in cane pruning, there are about 8-12 buds which are left in the process. Thus grape pruning helps in balancing the growth of the grape vines during every season and helps in producing better quality of fruits.
With practice and experience, you can develop the skill of grape pruning to get maximum fruit production.
