If someone asked you how important an RJ45 was to your life, would you have the faintest idea of what they were talking about? Most of us would not have a clue as to what it was and what role it played to make it so important and yet so many of us rely on them daily in order to communicate with each other especially if we work with computer systems.
The RJ45 is a very common, small connector which has huge importance in the successful transferring of data and information in a computer network. RJ45 cables are most commonly used for networking computers together allowing 2 or more devices to communicate with each other at speed without losing connection.
This connector is very similar to the one you will find in your telephone, in fact all connectors in the RJ series are used for connecting telecommunications, or data equipment or computer networking, these include the RJ11, RJ14 and the RJ25.
Different variations of the registered jack make a difference in the way they connect up, even if you think they all look the same; you will be surprised at how wrong you are. RJ25 uses a full six-wire configuration, whereas the RJ14 has a four-wire configuration and the RJ11 has a two-wire connection.
The RJ45 is the most commonly used connector in the UK which is applied to an Ethernet cable, these are put to use mostly for Ethernet connection, which is a network of a connection between numerous computers and allows them to communicate with each other.
Ethernet cables are the essential ingredient for networking computers allowing communication and data transfer between devices on a LAN. Most Ethernet cables will be sold as a whole unit with the connector already attached so there is no room for error.
Commonly mistaken for the 8P8C connector, this is due to its resemblance of the 8P8C, basically applying to the 8 pins. The 8P8C plug literally means an eight position eight contact plug and is often used for the standard communication connection of devices.
However the RJ45 will have male and female connectors, which will determine what sort of connection is made, it also differs in power efficiency and size, and this is shown in its ability to share large amounts of information between devices.
As you can see as this RJ45 starts to unravel, it plays a huge part in our everyday need to communicate and share information, this doesn't only apply in a working environment but also allows your home pc's if you want to link more than one devices together in order to play networked games etc, it is vital for the transfer of information at speed.
