There was once a time when all of your computer files were stored in diskettes. While most of your files may have been transferred to storage disks and uploaded to databases, there may be some that are still in the diskettes you have stacked on your shelves or in your drawers.
When flooding or leaking occurs in your home and these diskettes come in contact with water, there is a big possibility of you losing your valuable files forever. There are, however, some emergency mechanisms that you can employ in order to save your files from complete destruction. You can perform the following water damage restoration techniques on your diskettes:
1. Dry the diskette as soon as you can. Let it lie on a flat surface where it can be exposed to proper ventilation. Choose a room that has low humidity levels to keep the moisture away from the tape. Allow a minimal amount of sunlight to enter the room to hasten the drying process but make sure that the diskette is not directly exposed to sunlight as this may cause further damage.
2. Get an absorbent cloth and wipe the different parts of the diskette to dry them. If the diskette has come in contact with dirty flood waters, you can wet the cloth with soapy water and before you wipe it. Focus on areas where you see dirt stains but be very gently on the parts where the film is exposed.
3. If the water has penetrated deeply into the diskette you might want to consider bringing the diskette to professional repair men. They can bring all the parts apart to dry the insides and assemble them back together. This may be a risky job if you do it yourself since you will not have enough experience to do it carefully end efficiently.
4. However, if you want to save on repair costs and you prefer to do it yourself, you have to grab hold of a spare diskette that you do not need and practice on it. You can disassemble it to expose the wet areas and put everything back again. Once you have figured out the right way to do it, you can now start the water damage restoration of your diskette.
5. Once you have successfully performed the water damage restoration procedures, you now have to transfer the files in your diskettes to a safer storage disk. You can upload some of your important files on the internet or make backup copies to avoid any possibility of losing them.
